Yup. Imma say it. You can do whatever you want to on your wedding day. Maybe you’re a little surprised that you can include some sort of adventure on your wedding day. Sometimes couples have a hard time figuring out what they want to fill their day with besides just vows. Here you’ll find a list of all the Mammoth Lakes activities you can include!

Feel Free To Spice Up Your Wedding Day

Hey, I’m Kayla. With 22 years in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, I have the local expertise to plan your most outrageously unique wedding.

Mammoth’s best year round activities revolve around food and drink. Check out this list of my favorite local spots!

Since Mammoth enjoys all four seasons, I’ve organized these activities by the best time of year.

Okay, let’s get into it!

Mammoth Lakes Winter Activities (November-March)

Adventure Focused

  • Skiing & snowboarding: Hit the slopes at Mammoth Mountain for some epic skiing or snowboarding.
  • Snowshoeing: Explore Sherwin Meadows, the Lakes Basin or out by Shady Rest, Mammoth has lots of places to snowshoe.
  • XC skiing: There are many public and private trails in and around the Mammoth area. Tamarack is privately operated therefore requires a day or season ticket to enjoy their perfectly groomed trails. You can venture around Shady Rest or Inyo Craters for some of the publicly accessed trails.
  • Backcountry skiing: Whether guided or solo, the backcountry offers limitless terrain to explore on skis or snowboards. But please make sure you are well equipped in avalanche and snow safety.
  • Ice skating (alpine & rink): In early winter a lot of the high alpine lakes freeze enough to skate on. Please make sure you are equipped with the proper knowledge before trying alpine skating. After the snow really starts to set in, enjoy the LA Kings indoor rink where you can also rent skates.
  • Hiking (only on certain, groomed trails): Several public trails stay groomed in winter and don’t require snowshoes. These roads are Lake Mary road, the 203 to Minaret Vista and Shady Rest.
  • Snowmobiling: There are snowmobile tours that you can make reservations for online. If you have your own snowmobile make sure that you are riding in the proper areas!
  • Ice climbing: Explore June Lake and Lee Vining’s ice climbing through classes, guides, or your own solo adventures

Leisure Focused

  • Hot springs: There are many hot springs you can enjoy after a long day of skiing or adventuring!
  • Scenic gondola rides: Not a skier? Ride the gondola to Mammoth’s summit for epic views, stopping at McCoy mid-station.
  • Fishing: The Eastern Sierra offers many locations through every season to go fishing but particularly fly fishing the rivers in the winter.
  • Sledding & tubing: Enjoy Wooly’s Tube Park or find a hill near you and hike up it for some classic sledding.

Spring Activities in Mammoth Lakes (April-May)

  • Wild flower viewing: Wildflowers bloom at different elevations, so check Visit Mammoth’s social media for current peak dates.
  • Skiing & snowboarding: Spring skiing is officially here! Pack your Hawaiian shirts and your sunscreen! Events like the Annual Pond Skim at Mammoth are a great and fun way to end the year.
  • Backcountry skiing: This is when my fellow back country skiers go after “the corn”! But again, please make sure that you have the knowledge for safe backcountry travel or hire a guide.
  • Ice skating (rink only): The indoor rink will close in April for the season and open again in October.
  • Hiking: Lower elevation hikes like Convict Lake and McGee Creek are starting to thaw for the season.
  • Fishing: Like I mentioned previously, fishing is year round here! But more of the popular lakes have started to thaw and become fishable.
  • Mountain biking: Lower trails near Bishop and Tom’s Place are fully melted and ready for mountain biking.

Mammoth Lakes Summer Activities (June-August):

Adventure Focused

  • Hiking: Backcountry access grows all summer, but be mindful of swift creek crossings early in the season
  • Mountain biking: Mammoth offers over 80 miles of thrilling mountain bike trails for all skill levels, from beginner to expert.
  • Rock climbing: Mammoth offers thousands of climbing routes, ranging from easy access to multi-day backcountry trips.
  • Boating, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding: Convict Lake, Lake Mary, Crowley Lake, June and Gull Lake all have boat rentals available!
  • Horseback riding: There are quite a few packstations in the area where you can go horseback riding or even have mutli-day pack or saddle trips. Some of these packstations are Mammoth Lakes Pack Outfit, McGee Creek Pack Station, and Reds Meadow Resort and Pack Station.
  • Backpacking: This is personally my favorite summer pastime, it’s the best way to see the intense and rugged Sierra backcountry filled with wild flowers, crystal blue alpine lakes and lush meadows! Make sure to book your permits through Recreation.gov
  • Trail running: If you like power hiking, you might wanna give trail running a go! It’s the fastest way to see so many of the amazing sites in the area.
  • Camping: There are lots of different campsites within the town of Mammoth Lakes ranging from the Lakes Basin to Shady Rest. Just be sure to book as soon as they release dates because these campsites go fast! Use Recreation.gov for all your bookings!

Leisure Focused

  • Golfing: During the summer Mammoth operates two different golf courses: Sierra Star is an 18 hole course whereas Snow Creek Golf Course is a 9 hole, Par 35 course. Bishop also operates a public golf course year round.
  • Hot Springs: Choose one of the many hot springs to soak your aching muscles after a long day of hiking!
  • Star gazing: There are several meteor showers that happen during the summer in California and Mammoth is one of the perfect places to watch from! With very little light pollution you can watch the shooting stars, left and right!
  • E-Biking: For the folks who are more inclined to leisure, you can rent E-Bikes from quite a few different shops in town including Footloose and Get Outdoors 365.
  • Fishing: Since all the lakes are typically melted out by now (and some get stocked!),  feel free to fish to your hearts desire!

Fall Activities in Mammoth Lakes(September-October)

  • Fall color viewing: The number one most popular thing to do in Mammoth in the fall is to view the fall colors. You could spend days chasing the colors up and down the Eastern Sierra. Check out this interactive map that helps you get real time updates on where the colors go off!
  • Trail running: You can avoid the heat and the bugs if you decide to do some trail running in the fall! Not to mention you’ll get to see lots of amazing fall colors!
  • Camping: Not as many people decide to camp in the fall and quite a few begin to shut down in the fall to prepare for winter.
  • Cooler Backpacking: If you’re really up for an adventure you could try backpacking in the fall. Just be sure to pack lots of layers as the temps can drop drastically!
  • Hiking: With the cooler temps, it means less mosquitos! Make sure to bring those extra layers as the temps drop quick!

No matter what season you decide to tie the knot in here in Mammoth Lakes, there are endless activities to be had! The Sierra Nevada Mountains are more than just a backdrop, they are an invitation to start your marriage with an adventure. Whether you want to shred through fresh powder in your wedding attire or share a quiet toast surrounded by yellow aspens near an alpine lake, there are no rules here.

I hope this list sparked some ideas for your own Mammoth Lakes wedding! If you’re feeling inspired but aren’t sure how to logistically make your dream happen, that’s where I come in.
