Why Mammoth Lakes is the Dream Elopement Destination

Mammoth is a “choose your own adventure” kind of town. The area offers an insane variety of scenery. Most spots sit within a few minutes’ drive. You can exchange vows at a volcanic site like Hot Creek in the morning. Then be lakeside toasting with a beer at Lake Mary by sunset. You get those iconic high-alpine views with or without the 10-mile trek!

Getting Here: Secluded, Yet Accessible

Even though it feels like a secret sanctuary, getting to your Mammoth Lakes wedding is a breeze. It’s the perfect “destination” feel without the travel headache:

• Fly Direct to Eastern Sierra Regional Airport in Bishop (BIH): United Airlines flies directly into Eastern Sierra Regional Airport. You can catch flights from major hubs like San Francisco and Denver. Bishop sits just 45 minutes south of Mammoth. Note that flights may not run during shoulder seasons (fall and spring).
• The Semi-Private Route: Advanced Air offers semi-private flights directly into Mammoth Yosemite Airport (MMH) from Carlsbad, San Diego or Hawthorne, Los Angeles. It’s definitely more on the luxury side!
• The Scenic Drive: Fly into Reno (RNO) for a beautiful 3-hour drive south. You can also drive from LAX. That classic 5.5 to 6-hour road trip features killer views on Highway 395.

Winter & Spring: A Snowy Mountain Backdrop (December – April) 

Winter and spring offer endless snowy peaks. Enjoy diverse activities like backcountry skiing, snowshoeing, resort skiing, and snowmobiling. Just come prepared for cold mountain weather! Be prepared for some cold weather though! 

Summer: High-Alpine Trails & Sparkling Lakes (June – August)

Summer is perfect for those looking to hike, bike, backpack or just be warm! Summers in Mammoth can get really warm but the back country offers so many amazing views and activities!

• Picture this: Saying your vows with the most ridiculously gorgeous crystal clear lake shimmering behind you, reflecting those epic Sierra peaks. We’ve got a few of these beauties tucked away. Where the air is crisp and the views are straight out of a dream!

Obtaining Permits and Legalities for Your Ceremony

Understanding Eastern Sierra Land Use Permits (BLM, Forest Service, LADWP)

I know, I know, permits and legal stuff might not sound as exciting as scouting out those jaw-dropping mountain views, but trust me. Getting this part right is KEY to a smooth and stress-free elopement day. 

Here in the Eastern Sierra, much of the land we love to explore and photograph on is managed by some awesome folks. They help keep it beautiful for everyone. So, depending on where your heart is set for your ceremony, we might need to connect with a few different agencies:

Bureau of Land Management (BLM)

If you’re dreaming of saying your vows amidst some of that wide-open beauty that’s around Mammoth, we’ll need to look into their permit requirements. It’s usually a pretty straightforward process. However it can take up to 180 days to get one so it’s best to get the ball rolling sooner than later. You can check out this interactive map that will help you determine what land your dream location sits on.

National Forest Service

Craving that cozy forest vibe or a ceremony near one of our stunning lakes within the Inyo National Forest? While basic recreational groups under 75 people can gather freely on some public lands, formal wedding ceremonies and commercial wedding photography typically require a Special Use Permit. Don’t worry, as your photographer, I help navigate the specific Ranger District rules so we keep your ceremony completely above board and protect these beautiful public lands.

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP):

Now, this one might sound a little unexpected, but the LADWP actually manages a significant amount of land around Mammoth Lakes, especially many of those vast high alpine rivers. So, if your dream backdrop involves one of these sparkling beauties, we’ll need to check in with them about any necessary permissions.

Why all the paperwork? These permits help ensure that we’re being respectful of the land, minimizing our impact, and keeping these incredible places pristine for future adventurers (and future eloping couples!). It’s all about loving and protecting this amazing environment!

How to Get Your Marriage License in Mono County

While Mammoth Lakes will provide an unforgettable backdrop, you’ll also need to take care of the legal side of things to make your marriage official in the eyes of the law. That means getting your marriage license from the Mono County Clerk’s Office.

Here’s the lowdown on what you’ll typically need to do:

• Both of you will need to appear in person at the Mono County Clerk’s Office after you apply for the license online. You can find the form on the Mono County website listed above. You must then make an appointment with the Mono County Clerk’s Office. 
• Make sure to bring valid photo identification (like your driver’s license or passport).
• You will need to know your social security numbers and some basic information about your parents (like their full names and birthplaces).
• There is a fee associated with obtaining a marriage license but varies on whether you obtain a Public or Confidential license.
  • A Public License has an $82.00 fee, one witness is required to sign the license and be present at the ceremony and because it is a public license, anyone may obtain a copy of it. 
  • A Confidential License has a $93.00 fee, the parties must be living together as spouses, no witness is required and copies of the record are not available to the public.

Important Note: Marriage licenses in California are valid for 90 days from the date of issuance. So, you’ll want to plan your visit to the Clerk’s Office accordingly, making sure it’s within that timeframe of your elopement date.

How to Prioritize Your Mountain Wedding Budget

Another big consideration when planning your Mammoth wedding is how much time do you want to spend D.I.Y.ing  or would you rather hire someone else to do it? 

One of the biggest things when it comes to vendors is thinking about your priorities. Where do you want to put a majority of your budget? Are having documented memories that you can look back on high on your list? Or maybe food is a huge priority to you and hiring a private chef to cater your day is where it’s at. Or maybe it’s wanting to have the most epic experience and flying around in a helicopter all day. Either way, sitting down with your partner and figuring out your big desires for your wedding day is the first thing! 

Think about long term investment, what will last longer than your wedding day? Florals, photos, attire, memories from experiences? Here’s a quick exercise the two of you can do to help jump start your planning: 

• What matters most to us on our elopement day? Photos, florals, food, experiences, hair and makeup, etc? List them in top priority to least important. 

Once you have your priority list, you can start to decide where you want your budget to go! 

Tips for Hiring Local Eastern Sierra Vendors

A simple google search will help you find lots of local vendors in the area! There are also a lot of vendors that travel here from areas like Reno, Fresno (in summer), Ridgecrest and southern California, so if you aren’t seeing something that fits your vibe or budget in town, you can look at the nearby cities and see what their travel fees are. I highly recommend jumping on a phone call with every vendor that you are considering to be a part of your day, you want to make sure that they are the right vibe for you! 

The Adventurous Couple’s Guide to DIY Eloping

• Photography: Okay, if I’m being honest, this would be the ONE thing I would suggest investing in (I may be a lil biased) but think about it, photos will be the one thing that will last forever after your big day! Some photographers (like myself) will help you with things like finding the perfect locations, permitting processes and the absolute best lighting! You want to be able to look back at those photos and cherish them forever! But, if that is completely out of the question for you, a fun way to document the day is point and shoot disposable cameras! 
• Officiants: Hire someone local or see if your photographer is ordained (like meeee!). You can also have a friend or family member get ordained, it is super easy and cheap online! 
• Florists: You could take a flower arrangement class as a date day, or look on etsy for dried flowers that will last that way you don’t have to worry about wilting. 
• Hair and makeup artists: Do you have any friends or family that know a thing or two about hair and makeup? If not, YouTube is a great resource for tutorials!

Since Mammoth Lakes is a tourist destination, lodging is not in short supply. We have everything from Airbnbs to 5 star lodging! To make it easy for you, I’ve listed a few of the best places to stay/book through! 

• Airbnb: If you’re looking for a house or a place that can house a group of people, I would suggest going through Air BnB! 
• VRBO: This is also another site where you can find bigger homes or places with amenities! 

Luxury & Cozy Resorts: Limelight, The Westin, & More

• Limelight Hotel: This is Mammoth’s first 5 star accommodation, so if you’re looking for a little splurge on a nice accommodation, I would recommend looking here!
• Other Hotels: There are lots of other hotels in Mammoth that offer cozy accommodations like Juniper Springs, The Village Lodge, The Westin, Outbound Mammoth, Tamarack Resort and Mammoth Mountain Inn. 

A couple things to keep in mind while booking though. Places do book out quickly if you happen to be eloping on a weekend in a peak season (like winter and summer) or during any holidays! On the flip side, accommodations tend to run a lot cheaper in our “shoulder season” (fall and spring) or during midweek even in peak seasons! So if you have some flexibility in your date you are eloping, I would consider shooting for a midweek date!
